No, none that I know of.
Let me know if you discover anything else that looks odd. I'll be happy
to look at the modified file and the other config files to try and spot
anything

You can set in dnews.conf
dmgrsvc_port nnnnn
access_list 127.0.0.1,your.local.ip.address
To move the manager port and prevent access from outside your
ip addresses. (This requires a recent version of dnews, but you have that
already)
