That is very odd,  simply increasing the bucket size and deleting some buckets
should unjam this.  I gather you've since managed to unjam it but I'll look 
into
this further and check if there is a problem unjamming it by doing what you 
did.

If all else fails this technique should always work.
         increase bucket size
         reduce pile usage to cleanly delete some buckets
         stop the incoming feed
         run an expire.
         allow the incoming feed again

Anyway as I said we'll check this.
