Ok I think you can fix this the way you want by changing 
dnews.conf as follows:
    nntp_feeder your.upstream.site *
    suck_file1  suck1.dat

And then in the dnews work directory create a file called suck1.dat
which you can list all the groups you want/don't want one per line
using wild cards if you want.

However we do believe the 'me' feed rule should stop it sucking an unwanted
group, could you include your example newsfeeds.conf that didn't work
as expected and we'll double check this behaviour.
