Hi, well the short answer is 'that shouldn't happen' could you
do this please,
         ./mysqlauth
         check noexistentusername xxxx
And see how it responds, and send me the results, Also do this
         ./mysqlauth -version
And send the output of that too (also let me know the platform you are on)

A dnews.log might also be useful (showing a failed lookup)
