When the group is first read 'with' an xover command and only if
the group contains
more than about 20 messages. Then from then on it is maintained as the
items arrive.

Each night the xover indexes are re-written with the expired entries removed.
The efficiency of some of the above is a bit dependent on dnews version, in
general
the latest version should be a lot better than earlier versions.
