FW: Another newsgroup problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can tell this guy?  I recently upgraded my dnews to DNEWS Version 5.5h2 and added another sucking feed at the same time.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm using Netscape Communicator's (4.79) news reader module. No modifications. When I finish reading the group, I empty the trash and compact the folders. Then the program usually purges the read messages.

    This morning, I was told that I had over 500 new messages awaiting me to be downloaded from the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup. In actuality, it was a total of 6536. The system gave me no choice but to do this if I want to read the new messages. This is an almost weekly event and takes a long time to do. It has now finished and I am being told that I have a total of only 178 really new messages. I presume that the messages other than that are ones that I have already read, have purged from my system and will purge again.
    Can you tell me what's going on here? I sure don't like having to do this once a week since it is totally unnecessary.
