Yes, in most cases it will be safe to reinstall the old version over the
new, particularly if they are both 5.x versions.
Windows 9x is only minimally supported for various reasons, including a lack
of support for services. You will need to create a batch file to run the
commands that are normally run as services on NT.
Simply remove the addsvc commands -
addsvc -add dfts xmit.exe "dfts ftsfeed -fts -at *5 *"
Becomes -
xmit.exe "dfts ftsfeed -fts -at *5 *"
Ignore all other addsvc lines, and references to Services in the control
panel. Instead add the batch file containing the above to your startup
folder, and hopefully it will work as expected.
The simplest way to find the version you require is to run the binary and
see what appears at the top of dnews.log. You may find it easier to e-mail
your registration details to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and ask them what
versions your license applies for - that way you can obtain the latest
version available to you.
If you have a backup of dnews.log, this information may be recorded in
there.
