Check the output of 'tellnews stats' after not using a tellnews command for a while. Look for the xover figures, and see if they are taking up a signficant CPU time. Also check for disk performance which has an impact on performance building xover data.
You should notice that subsequent reads of the group are quicker as the xover cache will have already been built.
Somce clients don't use xover at all, it is an extension to the NNTP protocol. Obtaining messages using next -> head -> next... is significantly slower than xover as the message must be located within the spool, and there is a request for each message rather than streaming data.
The tellnews stats command requires 'timing true' in dnews.conf on NT.
