Hi,

The timeout value for DNews is specified in minutes, and defaults to one hour.

I have previously confirmed that DNews does in fact wait one hour before closing the channel. The usual cause of idle timeout problems are firewalls, most of which default to 10 or 15 minutes. You should check your firewall does not timeout connections too soon. Users with personal firewalls (or routers with built in firewalls or doing NAT) may also see this problem.

The failure to respond within 60 seconds may be a firewall issue, or an indication of a problem with the server. You should check the output of 'tellnews stats' to see how busy DNews is, and to find out what it spends most time doing. That may give an indication that your disk performance isn't fast enough for example. You can send these stats to us along with dnews.conf if you are unable to find the cause.

We have several users complaining that they get timeout from NNTP server. They get occasional, non-persistent problems with connections to the newsgroup server. The server disconnects user, sometimes when user is idle and sometimes in the middle of posting a message. If user reconnect immediately, they have no problems. This happens several times a day.

Even I get this issue. I use Outlook Express which is the most popular Newreader client our user community uses. After some idle time, I click on a message, it takes a while for connecting and finally I get following message:
"Your NNTP server has not responded in 60 seconds. Would you like to wait another 60 seconds for the server to respond"

Server: forums.sybse.com

If I click "Wait" , it keeps doing that. Finally I click on No and it comes back with
following message:
Download canceled
Outlook express was unable to download the message you requested.

If the message is taking too long to be displayed, it might be temporarily unavailable. Please try to download the message later. Outlook Express

Then if I click on another message, it connects without any issues.
I use Outlook express. Lot of active users use Forte Free Agent. They also get same
behavior.

I have following settings in dnews.conf
timeout 120

Is it causing it ? What is 120 ? Is it in seconds or minutes ? I get the error after 10 minutes idle time sometimes.

Any immediate advise is appreciated.
