FYI, the remember setting tells DNews how many days to remember the message IDs for unwanted or deleted messages (If deleted from the spool before this period).

Thanks for the info. While waiting for an answer to the original question, the expire.conf was set to:
pile 1 use 95% groups * remember 3
(not sure what 'remember 3' means though.
But tellnews status shows:
Pile 0, 0.0/0.0% 0MB, days=0 none-old-format Pile 1, 4.6/95.0% 129MB, * Pile 2, 38.8/(nolimit) 1085MB, none-old-format Pile 3, 0.0/(nolimit) 0MB, none-old-format Pile 4, 0.0/1.0% 0MB, days=1 none-old-format
I suppose something here is broken and must be fixed. Any idea as to what that might be?
Stop dnews Edit expire.conf === reserve 5% pile 0 use 0% groups none pile 1 use 95% groups * === Start dnews. tellnews rebuild_piles
