I had a more careful look at the banana pi, and see it has at least 1g
of ram. I might go for that depending on where I find it, for how
much, and accessories such as a case to name one.

Banana Pi also does have a sata interface which for your use case could
be usefull. Here in Europe prices are a little higher but not much.
