Yes, make it the default using dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc (remove the 'quiet' line altogether). You might need to change debconf priority to low see that prompt though, e.g dpkg-reconfigure debconf first.

Do the keyboard LED's flash when you try to boot? If so the kernel is loading but panicking.
