..also worth noting, is all the dirty tricks that can be pulled 
(and combined) at compile time to escape file name conflicts; a 
dozen years ago I learned it was possible to prepend and/or append 
things like svn commit IDs or build flags to FlightGear binaries, 
using the tool set we had back then to e.g install several 
FlightGear builds, side-by-side, to e.g. benchmark new ideas or 
X drivers etc, but I must admit I'm not aware of anyone actually 
using these tricks, AFAIR this idea was seen as "neat but total 
overkill for what we are doing here." :o)
