I just bought
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
Cedar [Radeon HD 5000/6000/7350/8350 Series]

And I am getting this error

[ 5.831720] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[ 5.831899] [drm:radeon_pci_probe] *ERROR* radeon kernel modesetting for
R600 or later requires firmware-linux-nonfree.

I don't want the firmware package as I desire a 100% free system (my CPU
doesn't need microcode updates to function securely, it is a 62xx series G34
Opteron)

Then replacing your video card might be the only option.
Replace with what? I bought this one as wikipedia says there is a free firmware option for it "radeon" - to me that means no blobs required but I guess "they" changed the definition.
Does anyone know if the blob is microcode or something more?

https://sourceforge.net/p/openradeonbios/wiki/Home/
I purchased it as it supports the open source bios replacement - I desire both free firmware, software and drivers (no blobs)

- Thanks
