Install alsa-utils (or whatever it's called) so you have the necessary
test tools, including speaker-test, aplay, amixer, alsamixer, and lots
of .wav files to test with. If Pulseaudio is installed, ask yourself
whether you really need it: It complicates troubleshooting with its
scads of hidden mutes.

Once speaker-test proves that your sound system works, go into orca's
config and make it output to ALSA. Crank up all volume controls with
alsamixer, and see if orca emits sound now.
