Hum... It looks like the problem is that the rewrite rule only works for
http, not https. Here are some working examples:

    http://ee.lbl.gov./
    http://dst.lbl.gov./

Aside from the question if apache should treat the dot and dot-less
versions the same or not, it seems like a bug that the redirect doesn't
happen.
