I am not necessarily disagreeing with you philosophically and I understand that
what you are talking about is the nuance of the word "invalid".
In this particular case, though, what is happening is that we are giving a
NODATA response when we should be returning a CNAME. It definitely looks like a
bug to us and we have a ticket open to fix it. I think it's fair to say the way
we are responding in this case is not a good representation of what is
happening in the zone. It's not the biggest bug I have ever seen but it's not
intended behaviour.
I am also interested in whether this behaviour is causing a discernible problem
for anybody, since if we have an example of a problem it will help us
prioritise a fix. It looks to me like we should fix this but nobody's day is
being ruined if we take our time.
