It is well worth taking a look at what Netflix has done here. Their problem is actually rather similar to ours. They want to leverage a single authentication interaction over a lot of transactions. They do this by using TLS to establish a security context that they can then leverage in other transactions. I am not suggesting that we take MSL directly.
