As with all "local-only" domains (wether they are for names or for
addresses), they unavoidably leak. Users see these names, they
copy-and-paste them in emails, in Web browsers and to the root it
goes.

[I assume this is the rationale behind the IETF's lack of enthusiasm
for local-only domains such as ".local" or site-local IP addresses.]
