It may be true that RFC 6761 was in effect created in order to regularlize the .local use, but my claim is that the .local use was more akin to the current issues with .corp and .home than like these cases, where penetration is quite a bit smaller. (I realise that .onion is important to Tor, but I am sceptical that Tor has the Internet penetration that Bonjour did long before 6761 was published. Certainly Namecoin use is insignificant compared to what Bonjour was.)
