Hi all,

I approached many of you (thanks) during the BKK meeting and also after the
meeting to sense how things are going in the WG. The main outcome I had from
the discussion is that changes are needed on two fronts:

  *   WG management
  *   WG missions
     * Need for better separation between operations vs. protocol maintenance
     * Need to structure the activities in the WG and prioritize among them
     * Lack of "roadmap" of DNS specifications cumulated since years. The WG
can inspire from two exemplary efforts: DNS terminology spec and BCP 237.

For the first point, I decided to move from the current 3 Chair positions to 2
as this allows for more clear ownership/responsibility. Also, given the load in
the WG and the need to prepare for future leaders in the OPS area and in the
IETF in general, we decided jointly with the Chairs to appoint 2 WG
secretaries. For full transparency, here are the main expectations we set for
this role:

  *   Keep track of documents/document dependencies/clustering
documents/interims organization/etc.
  * Help track of actions and their implementation in a timely manner
  * Share ideas to better streamline the work and avoid stale efforts in the
group
  * This is as a coaching opportunity to be ready for a Chair position

For the WG missions, and given that we have still some work in DELEG, the
proposed plan is to proceed in two steps. First, start a rechartering effort to
emphasis the separation between operations vs. protocol maintenance. That
structure will be followed in the WG meeting organizations, in particular. Once
DELEG is done, a second step will be to decide about the split of the WG to
offload protocol maintenance and dnsdev-like activities to a separate WG and
keep DNSOP focused on OPERATIONS. The WG will be invited to share feedback,
thoughts, suggestions, etc. on this. Stay tuned!

As a first step, I'm pleased to announce that I appointed, effective
immediately:

  * Ondřej Surý as a new WG Co-Chair: Ondřej is a DNS expert and open-source
software developer. Ondřej is the co-author of Knot DNS, open-source
authoritative DNS server developed under CZ.NIC.
  * Peter Thomassen and Shumon Huque as WG Secretaries.
  * Jim Reid as Tech Advisor: I asked Jim to hold the pen for the
rechartering work. Jim will share more details at his convenience.

Please join me to warmly thank Tim and Suzanne for the years of service.
Welcome Jim, Ondřej, Shumon, and Peter!

Cheers,
Med
