Dear DNSOP WG,

I would like to introduce a new Internet-Draft for discussion in the
DNSOP Working Group:

A Framework for DNS Resolution Latency Measurement
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-jwang-dnsop-dns-latency-measurement/

DNS resolution latency is widely used by recursive resolvers,
authoritative DNS operators, network operators, measurement platforms,
and researchers. However, latency measurements are often obtained using
different measurement scopes, measurement points, methodologies, and
operational contexts. As a result, measurements reported as DNS latency
may represent different aspects of the DNS resolution process and can be
difficult to interpret and compare consistently.

This draft proposes a conceptual framework for describing DNS
resolution latency measurements. The framework introduces common
terminology and a set of measurement attributes, including measurement
objective, measurement scope, measurement point, latency components,
and measurement context.

It also defines three conceptual timing components covering
client-to-recursive communication, recursive resolver processing, and
recursive-to-authoritative interaction. In addition, the draft proposes
a reusable measurement description template to facilitate consistent
reporting and interpretation of DNS latency measurements.

The framework is intentionally implementation-agnostic and
protocol-neutral. It does not define new DNS protocol behavior,
modify DNS message formats, or prescribe a specific measurement
algorithm. Instead, it aims to provide a common conceptual basis for
describing and comparing existing DNS latency measurements.

I would appreciate feedback from the WG, in particular on the following
questions:

1. Is the problem addressed by this draft appropriate for the DNSOP WG?

2. Is the proposed framework and terminology useful for describing and
comparing DNS latency measurements in operational environments?

I would also welcome comments on the scope, terminology, measurement
model, and measurement description template.

Thanks for your review and feedback.

Best regards,

Jiushuang Wang
