Ok... so young DJB fussed about my last posting on this topic.
He was using .COM, my first numbers had no .COM entries. He appeared to
be interested in the number of zones hosted per software version, I
am only interested in the software version diffusion rate. That said,
I have tried to mimic his techniques for this data.
17dec2003 .COM zone, extract unique nameservers, send them targeted
queries to "exercise" version specific behaviour, report the results.
Untested nodes either timed out or were indeterminant. There is
an increase in the number of unique servers from Dans report (599,366)
to mine (625,489) or 26,123 more servers in the course of the year.
Unlike Dan, I do not try to map servers to the domains hosted. It
is interesting (to me) that the distribution between .COM and infrastructure
TLDs (in-addr.arpa) is pretty close.
-----------------------------------------------------
Total Servers - 625,489
Untested - 195,977
Windows - 95,903
22 Other Versions - 8,812
TinyDNS (1.04 & 1.05) - 10,464
Bind 4 (all) - 8,105
Bind 8 (all) - 90,055
Bind 9 (all) - 216,173
