I looked at xdg-open, and all it does is call gnome-open $* for GNOME. And when I run gnome-open mailto:[email protected] I get ///[email protected] - when I run gnome-open mailto://[email protected] I get //[email protected].
Looks like the bug is in gnome-open (part of libgnome - calls g_app_info_launch_default_for_uri to do its work), not xdg-open.
