I believe the issue is that updating items is currently a "don't call us, we'll call you" affair where the updates are initiated by Do core and not the plugins. Adding something to core for this plugin would be a special case. Having some method by which plugins can request an update (such as this reindex option) is an issue that has been under discussion for some time, and may be added once we've worked through all the issues associated with it.
