In terms of e-newsletter strategy I've been most impressed by the
Senate Democrats <http://www.dscc.org> for their conversational style
and then the Bush campaign for local content strategically generated
from their database.

I expected to see weekly "read this and you'll be in the loop" e-mail
newsletters with quick links to new content and _local_ campaign
events and volunteer opportunities from the major Presidential
candidates by now. Right now the two major candidates are flooding
folks with so much daily communication it is unlikely that much is
being read or at least absorbed.

However, today Kerry sent out a long essay on Iraq - it had a simple
subject line "Iraq" and was basically the full text of a long speech.
Ah, the e-mail didn't even say it was a speech given at New York
University:

I don't recall receiving (or at the least reading) the full text of
other speeches. I guess this speech is meant to matter
strategically.

Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox for September 20 is now online at:
   http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20040920.html

Summary:

Both candidates for president of the United States offer email
newsletters with much good content to excite supporters, but
miserable subscription interfaces and several other usability
problems.
