The FEC, which is beginning to consider restrictions on political advertising, blogs, and other online activities, released a document describing the legal issues it plans to take on over the next few months. The agency plans to hold a public hearing on the issue and then vote on the final regulations later this year. Members of congress concerned about possible new regulations have sent letters to the FEC urging that a press exemption apply to the Internet. Senator Harry Reid, D-Nev., has also introduced legislation that would exempt Internet politicking from most of campaign finance regulations. Netizens have likewise been actively trying to persuade the FEC on the issue. In preparation for the FEC's expected vote, a group of bloggers and political activists have organized a petition to the commission through the website Online Coalition (www.onlinecoalition.com). The petition has received over 3,200 electronic signatures as of Friday morning. Online Fact Check Website has launched in the UK just ahead of election season. The website is made up of a stellar team of political journalists to scrutinize statements and facts given by UK politicians before, during and after the UK's general election. The site takes its lead form the very successful US FactCheck.org, a hugely a successful site launched for during US Presidential election in November 2004. FactCheck promises to provide the most reliable analysis of what the political parties and their leaders are saying. The site will offer unbiased scrutiny of speeches, interviews and manifesto pledges - informing public debate by creating a popular resource for an information-hungry electorate. FactCheck is led by Jon Bernstein, former editor-in-chief of the government's DirectGov website. More: http://www.journalism.co.uk/news/story1318.shtml Political spin: I hate to jump the gun on a site that’s not yet completely functional -- in UK politics you have to be ready – but in the UK, the elections are over before you know it. ----------------------------------------- Want More News?
