When someone (such as any of you) comes up with a HOWTO document that is hosted at their own site, all I need is a URL that I can add to the list. But when the person asks if we can host it here on www.e-smith.org, I am often asked what format I would like the document in. The truth is that I don't really care - since I want to make it as easy as possible on the person writing the documentation and I appreciate the fact that they are going to write up the documentation in the first place. Having said that, though, receiving Microsoft Word files (I have!) is not particularly helpful... I have to open it up in StarOffice and then export it to HTML. (and the HTML I've seen through that process is *really* ugly!) So I really prefer to receive HTML files or text files. Even more ideal, though, is if somone wants to markup a file in DocBook SGML and send it to me. That way I can take that SGML file and generate HTML and PDF extremely easily. It's easiest for me that way. To help with that, I put up a sample template and text on: http://www.e-smith.org/docs/ under the heading "Contributing documentation". The template is specifically at: http://www.e-smith.org/docs/template-howto.sgml I don't know if anyone will actually use it, but I'm now making it available in case someone wants to. At some point in the future I'll be writing up a longer description of how we develop our documents internally, which will include references to DocBook and the various tools we use to process it.
