Hey, folks,

I haven't communicated much recently because I've been focused on some
internal projects, but just thought I'd drop a note to say hello and
mention some of the HOWTO documents that people have requested in the
past but neither Kirrily nor I have had the time to write... if any of
you would be interested in writing one of these, we'd certainly love
to see it!

The topics I've had requests for are:

  - PPTP client configuration: the detailed steps you have to go through
to: a) install PPTP on a Win98/NT/2K system; and b) the process you
go through to set up a PPTP connection to an e-smith server. We
provide some minimal instructions in the user manual at:
       http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/4.1/admin-remoteaccess.html#PPTP
but we've had people ask for some more detailed instructions.

  - How to configure a custom dynamic DNS provider: If you don't like
the four dynamic DNS providers we provide hooks to, it is possible
to customize the system to use another provider. But we do not
provide any information on how to do so in the manual.

  - How to use a NETLOGON.BAT script to automate Windows clients: There
has been a great amount of discussion in the lists on this, and
Des actually sent me some info that I'm looking to incorporate into
the manual, but it would be great if there was a HOWTO that
described more of what you could do with NETLOGON.BAT and provided
     some examples.

  - How to disable services: Again, something that's been in the lists,
but something we'd love to have a HOWTO on. How do you disable
services that you don't want running on your e-smith server.

  - RAID recovery: If you are using RAID1 software mirroring, a) how do
you know if one of your disks has failed; and b) what do you do
to recover and return to mirroring

Additionally, we have a HOWTO on transitioning from a prior email
system (http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/emailtransition-howto.html )
that is sorely in need of a rewrite. The existing document only describes
the transition from *one* email scenario - having existing POP3 accounts
at an ISP that you then want to transition to being on the e-smith server.
This works fine as a "section" of the document, but there should also be
sections on topics such as what to do if you are migrating from a system
such as Exchange Server or Notes.

Like I said, all of these are in our queue and eventually we'll work
on them, but if anyone wants to take a crack at any of these topics,
the assistance would certainly be welcome.

Thanks,
Dan
