Ah, the first time I read this, I took 'inking' to be some sort of
printing problem (ink, get it? :-), not "linking".

The most common reason for ID/IDREF linking problems is attempting
to format a document that does not have a <!DOCTYPE declaration.
If you don't use the DTD, there are no "ID" type attributes in the
document, so all IDREFs fail.

If I abandon XT, I'll probably use XSL keys to avoid this problem.
