I've done it on some documents and it's really easy, only things that I found to be 
different the first time was:

1) all tags are in lowercase
2) empty elements are written as <tag/>

I'd browse trough <http://www.docbook.org/tdg/html/ch02.html#d44e3057> for more info 
if I were you, then add the xml header and run it trough a xslt engine or xml parser 
and it should tell you what (if anything) is wrong with your document. All the 
conversions I've done have been 10 minutes of work.
