Jens, have a look at RefDB (http://refdb.sourceforge.net). This is a reference manager and bibliography software designed for SGML, XML, and LaTeX. It can't handle BibTeX styles, but uses styles defined as XML documents instead. There is no need for post-processing besides the use of the customized stylesheet driver files.
