I'm using Java 1.6.0_01, and XSLTHL highlighting works fine.

Can you please tell us exactly what Java error you got?

The <span class="ERROR"> elements are results of the DocBook XSL build
process (the XHTML stylesheets are generated from the HTML versions). I have
filed a bug report:
