Hello again,
I finally found the problem myself,
it had nothing to do with docBook itself in the end, but a general
output template that was getting imported with other - necessary -
templates and caused all the chaos. (a template match=[all html
elements] applying all templates).
docBook 1.75.2 also now displays the table contents correctly and
without further ado.
