Have you tried using the namespace declaration in your document?

Something like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<article
        xmlns='http://docbook.org/ns/docbook'
        xmlns:xlink='http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink'
        xmlns:mathml="http://www.w3.org/TR/MathML2/dtd/mathml2.dtd";
        version="5.0" xml:lang="en">
<title>Title of your document</title>

This should replace the entity declaration and still let your mathml validate.

HTH,

Carlos
