Well, they do not help much in this respect, when it comes to
upgrading a new version of DocBook. But well, that's not the only
limitation in the provided customisation model - most of them coming
from syntactic constrainsts.
I've started to work on the specs of a DTD customisation engine, that
would allow to say "remove this element/attribute" and such, and check
constraints like "it must be a pure subset" in rewritten rules. I'll
open a project on freesoftware.fsf.org to have a place to discuss the
scope and implementation of the thing.
