I don't know about that.  A good typesetting system (er, TeX) would want
to typeset e in a math font, not a simple italic font.  That markup
loses the metadata that this isn't simply a letter 'e', but rather the
transendental number e.

Perhaps a role attribute could be added somewhere, so that you'd have
<phrase role="whatever">e</phrase>?  It loses the mathematical markup
around e, but it sounds like you're not really putting an inlinequation
into your prose in the first place.  

Just remember to update your stylesheets accordingly.  :-)
