The DocBook TC proposes to close RFE #660044 with the following changes:
Add a 'startinglinenumber' attribute to the elements that have a
'linenumbering' attribute (programlisting, screen, etc.). If
specified, it indicates the starting line number for that environment.
Add a 'continuation' attribute with enumerated values "continues" and
"restarts" to the elements that have a 'linenumbering' attribute
(programlisting, screen, etc.). If specified, it indicates the
starting line number for that environment is one more than the
starting line number from the previous environment.
It is an error to specify both and startinglinenumber takes precedence.
