Stefan and the DocBook community,
Stefan, thanks for bringing the deadline to everyone's attention.
I would be glad to act as administrator for the DocBook project.
To that end, there are a few things that need to happen that I cannot do
on my own:
1) We need some mentors; so far, Stefan is the only person who has
signed on as a mentor. Seems to me that we need at least two or three
projects with mentors to make a credible application.
I'm not quite convinced of this. In this stage the goal is for the
DocBook project to be accepted as mentoring organization. I don't think
that DB requires much work to be considered by Google as credible, given
its long and successful history.
It is once that potential applicants are looking for things to work on
that we need to show mentor availability. Similarly with tasks: they are
merely suggestions for students who want to work on DB, but don't have
made up their mind on what specifically to work on.
It may also happen that a student shows up with a fully thought-out
project, only looking for a mentor.
2) We need backup mentor for each project. It's not essential, but it
would help the application and would also make sure that students have
more than one person to work with in case someone is out of town, etc.
This is the next step: By April 21st, student applications need to be
handed in, matched with mentors. Google will assign slots to mentoring
organizations based on that application list. (See
http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2010/timeline)
So, all that needs to happen for the March 12th deadline is that we
apply to be accepted as an organization, quite independently of how many
slots we will end up getting.
Thanks,
Stefan
