Hi Brad,
Sounds sensible to me. I often use @role to create "new" elements in
DocBook, since it is particularly easy to write XSL templates that match
on an element with a role attribute for handling such special cases.

Hi
How has anyone dealt with content that appears in plate sections (if
at all)?
I'm using DocBook for the production workflow of all the books of a
large publisher, and are keen to respect the printed form to some
extent (so, for example, tables are placed in the text flow where they
occur on the page), assuming that other processing applications could
move such components somewhere else if they wanted to.
Given that approach, I was wondering about using a
sidebar[@role='plateSection'] as a container for a string of
<figure>s, located at the relevant point in the text where the plates
occur. Then, when we come to do something with the text online we can
easily pull them out into an illustrations tab or whatever.
Sensible? Mad? Grateful for your thoughts.
Brad
