For fun, I'd like to see two things (or be told how to do it on my cvs
version):
1) a bit more interesting background. Doesn't matter, something off http://home.netscape.com/assist/net_sites/bg/backgrounds.html would be easy and quick. Even something as subtle as: http://www.sfsu.edu/~jtolson/textures/sort/blue/darkblue/3.htm
The reason why is that if the bg has a little action it might give the depth that Stas was asking about.
IMHO, the bg should be of a solid color, not an abstract pattern, even as an image. It shouldn't add to distraction. None of the bg's from netscape URL fit. I think we need a simple lined bg, I cannot find any examples right now. :(
You should be able to play with the cvs version by simply editing the src/style.css. Or do you say that CSS doesn't support bg as an image?
2) I'd also love to see the menu with a small font and no lines.
go ahead and make it the way you like :)
And about those random images. How about one space that rotates through the books, and another one that rotates through a tips page? The easy way to make it dynamic is to make the images call a CGI script, I guess. Honestly, I don't think it's a rotten idea to really show some real people. Doug or Stas standing at the microphone giving a talk, mod_perl'ers talking, Randal dancing (no, scratch that last one)... connects people to the technology.
If you use a CGI script, to fetch the image you cannot use any text on the ad and you need a special handling of click-throughs, ala ads systems. Also the machine it's running on is usually very loaded, so it may take ages to serve the image. Also you need to have all the images of the same size or the page won't render if the size isn't specified until the image is downloaded.
