In fact, I don't favor the idea of going back to all white-bg. If you stare at the two snaphots you will realize that it's much easier to concentrate on the content when the menu bar is using a different color. I think this is more of usability nit, rather than design one.
Yes, I agree with Stas: the second one looks great, and it will have less problems with browsers.
Not that the first one doesn't look great, it does, but it might cause some problems.
