Since most of the browsers that I know don't use ALT tag in linked images, we lose an added value of seeing the titles of prev|up|next.

e.g. here they use both:
http://www.cm.cf.ac.uk/Dave/C/chapter2_19.html
(disregard the design, but think of concepts)

my suggestion is to add at the end of each page, just before the tail, the following table:

prev: title...
up  : title...
next: title...

in addition to the buttons. This doesn't break the design and provides an added value. What do you think?
