I had forgotten about this article. Since it came out, Player is now available.
It is possible to install OpenSolaris in the free VMware Player with a little
patience. I will write up how to do it. (You can figure it out from bits and
pieces on the forums but there isn't one coherent document I know of)

Subject: [docs-discuss] Website Documentation Update

Hey all,

http://www.opensolaris.org/os/article/2006-02-27_getting_started_with_opensolaris_using_vmware/

I followed the instructions and it needs a few modifications:

1) The RAM required to install Solaris Express Developer edition is 768 meg
(ouch!)
2) The section that discusses changing your screeen resolution after install is
no longer relevant. It came up just fine after install for me on VMWare 5.x
