Hi Mike, I remembered today that we do have a GUI tool for generating HTML from the XML. Here you go, this is just install and click one button, much easier: http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/documentation/files/DocBookTrans-1.zip
Complete instructions are in /bin/userdocs, note that it requires the JRE 1.5 to run. It is an open source java app. under CDDL, so feel free to hack away.
