No.  The client authenticates.
OK, I'll remember. ;-)
It's just that Merriam Webster says authenticate is a transitive verb, so I thought "client has authenticated ...", but what has he authenticated ?

Exactly.  It's the client that has authenticated, and has the
credentials to use on subsequent requests.
