--- Comment #7 from Rich Bowen <[email protected]> --- The word "htaccess" itself is a holdover from an ancient time (1991 or so) when the entire purpose of the file was to restrict who had access to an http resource. Hence, ht access. It's not an actual English word. And yes one presumes that most users of this technology don't know that origin. Over time the purpose of the file expanded and the name remained. It would be nice if a different name has been chosen 30 years ago but here we are. And of course there were many years where one had to use a different file name on windows due to the 8.3 filename restriction, which is also ancient history at this point. The danger of changing that file name to something else is that troubleshooting a server becomes a guessing game of where the configuration might be hiding. That's why we have consistently encouraged people (on irc and on the users mailing list) not to do this. So suggesting in the doc that someone do this seems unkind. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [email protected] For additional commands, e-mail: [email protected]
