According to the “Debian, Ubuntu (Apache httpd 2.x):” section of the
DistrosDefaultLayout page, the DocumentRoot for Debian is /var/www/. While this
is the case for our install, that is because it is decades old…
Since httpd 2.4, Debian’s default has been /var/www/html/:

By the way, the layout documentation is in
/usr/share/doc/apache2/README.Debian.gz (yeah, it is gzipped😒).
