From the screenshot you sent me offlist, I can see the source of our miscommunication. You are using alfresco from documentation.libreoffice.org while I am using it from alfresco.libreoffice.org. The views are indeed very different.
The view you are using appears to not have the Checkout option among the icons found when you hover over the file in the list.
