Hi :)
The only comment i could think of was a bit rubbish and more appropriate for
the mailing list and NOT really good as a comment under an article.  The only
good thing about it is that it might stir up a bit of debate but i don't think
it's even going to do that :(  Can someone else please try to write a brief
comment?  Preferably just 1 or 2 words rather than toooo verbose (like mine
is).  Also preferably not so off-topic!

Here's what i wrote ...

Hi :)
There has been some discussion on mailing lists about "Community Development"
people but there seems to be some confusion about what it means.

It's sort of a cross between "marketing person" and "receptionist" with a bit
of "liaison" thrown in because of the marketing angle.  A team leader would
hopefully be "in charge of" such a person just as they are "in charge of"
people doing other work for the team.  It's a bit like you wouldn't expect the
team's book-keeper or web-designer to be Team Leader as those are roles can be
delegated without the Team Leader "losing control".

In the early stages of trying to develop a team, where there are few people or
even no-one in the team at all, then a "Community Development" person might
end-up being leader but that is ust adding to their work-load and needs to be
taken up by; the team as a whole (if it's to be a committee-led team or other
non-hierarchical), or by an individual (preferably one that gets voted in with
re-elections often enough but not too often).

Of course a LOT of the language normally used to explain these things is a very
wrong when applied to voluntary workers.  Instead of "being in charge of" it's
more normal to guide people or even, as in Jean's case, to inspire people.

Tom :)

See what i mean about it being exactly wrong?
